Bangs
refers to the front part of the hair that is cut in different styles so that it
hangs over the forehead. The typical name for bangs is “fringe,” and it is only
in American English where they are called bangs. The term “fringe” comes from
the fringe that usually seen at the end of tapestries or shawls, and the
hairstyle looked similar to it and was named the same. Bangs were named so
because they were cut straight across at the front, which is similar to
“bang-tail” where a horse’s tail was cut off straight across. Fringe has been
an on and off trend throughout history, and in some eras it was common to have
fringe hair while, in others, it was unfashionable. For example, in ancient
Egypt wigs were designed with bangs straight across while in the 1600s to the
1800s women wore their hair without bangs. Then in the 1900s bangs came back
into style when women started cutting their hair short.
Today
there are different ways to cut your bangs as they have come back into style,
and they are easy to cut so you can either cut them yourself or go to a
stylist. In the 1980s and the1990s curly, teased bangs were popular, but at the
turn of the 21st century bangs switched from straight across the forehead to on
the side. Some of the various fringe hairstyles that are seen today include
straight bangs, side-swept bangs, blunt bangs, pin-up bangs, parted bangs,
choppy bangs, wispy bangs, face-framing bangs, long bangs, heavy bangs,
sweeping bangs, and sleek bangs. All bangs can be styled to match your hair
(all except short bangs), so you can curl them to the side, curl them straight
down, or straighten them.
Cutting
bangs is not as hard as you may think, and many women end up cutting their
bangs because they grow out fast and they have to cut them in between haircuts.
The cut will differ depending on if you want straight bangs or side-swept bangs
and if you want any other kind of bangs other than these you may want to go to
the stylist. For straight bangs, brush you bangs in front of your face and then
decide on how much you want to take off. Then take them and twist them (to give
you that uneven, natural look), and cut them below where you want them because
bangs bounce back after cutting. For side-swept bangs, you can either cut up or
down (I prefer down because cutting upward is dangerous) in a diagonal line,
but make sure you cut away from where you want them at first – or else they
will be really short and not look good.
